QNAP’s new rackmounted NAS pair

QNAP announced a pair of rackmount four-bay NASes targeted at corporate and entry-level enterprise buyers.

The TS-439U-RP and TS-439U-SP are 1U rackmount NASes that can hold four hot-swappable 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA up to 2 TB capacity. The hardware core of each includes an Intel ATOM 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB DDRII memory and and dual Gigabit LAN ports supporting seven configurable modes including link aggregation, failover and multiple LAN.

Drives can be configured into multiple volumes using RAID 0/1/5/6/5+ spare, and JBOD. Online RAID capacity expansion and RAID level migration are supported and volumes can be optionally AES encrypted. Both models also can function as iSCSI target stores.

The TS-439U-RP includes a redundant power supply, while the TS-439U-SP ships with only a single supply, with an open bay for upgrading to a second supply.

Other features include secure FTP, encrypted remote replication, email and SMS alerts, SMB/CIFS, NFS, and AFP network file systems. The new models run QNAP’s new AJAX-based V3 OS that includes a revamped web-based management GUI and EXT4 support for very large volumes and file sizes.

From the website:

QNAP TS-439U-RP/ SP is the new generation 1U rackmount model of the worldwide award-winning Turbo NAS Series, providing superior performance for massive data sharing, powerful all-in-one business server features, advanced RAID data protection, built-in iSCSI target service, AES 256-bit volume-based encryption, and rock-solid hot-swappable hard drive design for business. The newly-designed HDD tray for 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch HDD dual support is also equipped in TS-439U series, which gives users more choices to deploy the hard drives.

Superior Performance and Advanced RAID Redundancy
The TS-439U-RP/ SP is featured with Intel® Atom 1.6 GHz CPU and 1GB DDRII memory. It supports RAID 0/ 1/ 5/ 6/ 5+ hot spare, JBOD, Online RAID Capacity Expansion, and Online RAID Level Migration.

Flexible iSCSI and Virtual Disk Solution
The TS-439U-RP/ SP can serve as a NAS, an iSCSI target server or an iSCSI initiator. The built-in iSCSI target feature provides an affordable IP-SAN (Storage Area Network) alternative for business. You can set up the NAS to expand the storage capacity of the existing application servers, such as database server and mail server in an economic way. Moreover, the VDD (Virtual Disk Drive) feature is supported on the TS-439U-RP that you can use the built-in iSCSI initiator to connect to other iSCSI targets on the network to expand the storage capacity of the NAS.

Redundant Power Supply for Higher Reliability
The TS-439U-RP is designed with two 150W power supply units which prevent the TS-439U-RP from downtime, in the event of a short circuit of one power supply. Even if one of the power supplies fails, the other one will take over to supply the full power and the TS-439U-RP can operate as usual.

Secure Data Protection by AES 256-bit Volume-based Encryption
The TS-439U-RP/ SP’s dominant “volume-based encryption” feature secures the server data by AES 256-bit encryption. Even if the hard drives were stolen, there is no need to fear the confidential data would be leaked since the data can only be accessed by an authorized password.
