Coraid EtherDrive SAN boosts fault tolerance with double parity RAID

Coraid Inc., a provider of SAN (storage area network) solutions, announced availability of a firmware upgrade that introduces RAID6 (redundant array of independent disks) support for EtherDrive SAN.

Double Parity RAID, or RAID6, safeguards against data loss by allowing an array to keep working with no lost data even if two disks fail. A second set of parity is calculated and distributed across all the drives, providing significantly more robust fault tolerance.

Coraid EtherDrive provides fast SAN solutions exceeding Fibre Channel speeds at Ethernet prices. CORAID designs and manufactures network storage appliances based on the open ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) lightweight network storage protocol. AoE leverages the advantages of Ethernet without the burden of TCP/IP overhead. EtherDrive SAN is the affordable alternative to iSCSI (internet SCSI) and Fibre Channel.

“RAID6 eliminates the risk of data loss if a second hard disk drive fails or an unrecoverable read error occurs while the RAID array is rebuilding,” said James Kemp, CEO of Coraid. “Because our EtherDrive SAN solutions are so extremely affordable, customers can have a completely redundant, fault tolerant SAN at a fraction of the cost of a comparable iSCSI or Fibre Channel solution.”

Built for virtualization environments, EtherDrive SAN provides fault tolerant network storage that is very complimentary to a VMware Infrastructure solution.

Coraid EtherDrive SAN is a scalable network storage solution that fits SMB (small and medium business) budgets. Delivering Fibre Channel speeds at Ethernet prices, EtherDrive SAN is fast, simple to understand and easy to use. Built on the open AoE lightweight SAN protocol, EtherDrive provides enterprise-class storage that embraces virtualization for the demands of IT organizations.

About Coraid EtherDrive SAN:

Coupling Ethernet technology with SATA hard disk drives, EtherDrive® SAN solutions exploit commodity components to deliver affordable, fast SAN solutions that are budget friendly! EtherDrive® SAN solutions accept standard SATA hard disk drives, so whether you use your own SATA compliant 3.5” disk drives or our certified enterprise class disk drives, you are in control!

EtherDrive® SAN solutions use the open ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) lightweight network storage protocol. Simple. Easy to understand. Easy to use. AoE uses Ethernet to transport ATA disk commands without the burden of TCP/IP overhead, thereby enabling disk drives to become AoE devices connected directly to an Ethernet network. An AoE device can be a single physical disk or a logical device made up of multiple disks. An EtherDrive® SAN appliance is an AoE target device.  Source
